I received the most wonderful soup from Susan of Libellula Jewelry. (She has a shop called Cicada Silver too.) She wrapped each ingredient individually in tissue paper and packaged it all in a handmade box. She labeled everything so beautifully, it was so hard for me to take it all apart. I just loved looking at it and going thru it again and again. Susan does really wonderful metal work. She etches and solders and makes her own jump rings and head pins. Along with all the metal, came glass, ceramic and gemstone beads.

The first piece I made was this necklace using one of the focals she sent. This etched pendant is colored with a pretty shade of turquoise and bezeled beautifully.Inside the pendant is a little piece of paper that says 'seek peace'. I love that it says that. I also used one of the clasps that she sent. It is a hand formed copper hook. The beads are beads I made out of bright green, turquoise and ivory and then etched. I love this necklace and have worn it already many times.
The next piece is a bracelet using most of the pink beads she sent. The cherry quartz, the pink opal and the pink adventurine carved focal. I just had to add that pop of green with the flower bead. I like that it echos the flowers in the main focal.

The next piece is a simple pair of earrings. Using the earwires, headpins, hammered rings and turquoise Susan sent. I love how well the balled ends of the ear wires, matched the color of the orange sea foam quartz.

Susan sent me so many wonderful pieces and I just couldn't get all of the pieces done that I want to make. The button clasp is one of my favorite things she sent. I just couldn't make up my mind how to use it. Over the next couple of days I am hoping to get two more pieces done. I will post pictures as soon as I can. Susan was lots of fun to work with. I wish we lived closer because I would love learn some of what she knows about metal.

Awhile back I took Kerry Bogert's Aspire to Wire course. It really was so much fun. Every morning for thirty days there was a new project. Really just like Christmas everyday for a month. She is very talented and I learned a lot of different things. Her tutorials where well written and the photos were great! This class has put a lot of different ideas swirling around in my head. I have not gotten to make many of the projects, but here are two. I love how both of them turned out. Hope to work on some of the other projects soon.
Is it weird that I love getting tools? A friend of mine just gave me a handful of files. All different sizes and shapes. I am so excited to get them! I have been working with wire and metal for a little bit and I know these will come in handy. Wasn't sure I would use the handles, but we put the one on and it does make it much easier to hold.Snazzy Doodle Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06116058413948558506noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1376221024491366941.post-82328158054438663712013-02-18T11:59:00.000-05:002013-02-18T11:59:08.904-05:00The Soup I sent Susan

This is the soup I sent my partner Susan of Libellula Jewelry.I was trying to listen to what Lori Anderson wrote in a couple of the emails she sent all of the Bead Soup participates and get my soup ready before I had a partner. And I did pretty much have it done. I was very happy with the color combination of the two sets of beads I had made and the lampwork focal. It was what metal I was sending with it, that had me stumped. I finally decided on the brass. I thought it looked good with the colors of the beads and kinda gave it that beachy look that I love, and I really wanted to include that little fish bead(silly, I know). But that made the clasp a bit of a problem for me. I had the triangular one in my stash, but I really wanted to make one. I had recently found the 16 gauge brass wire at my hardware store. So I made a simple clasp with a double wrap of wire. I had recently taken Kerry Bogert's on line course, where she explained how to patina brass and it worked! I also included a length of brass chain.

I also sent two enamel beads that could be used for a focal. A couple of pressed glass beads and a length of sari silk.

It was fun to put this soup together and I hope Susan enjoys working with it.Snazzy Doodle Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06116058413948558506noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1376221024491366941.post-7283363402350515072013-02-15T16:10:00.000-05:002013-02-15T16:10:27.571-05:00Bead Soup Arrived!
The mail lady brought my soup for the 7th Bead Soup Blog Hop!! Look how cute this box is!! I just couldn't wait to open it! But first let me start at the beginning. My partner is Susan of Libellula Jewelry and Cicada Silver. She makes beautiful jewelry pieces like this.....

I love the colors and the look of this piece. But look at the copper components she has made aren't they wonderful? Look at this bezel and the clasp! Aren't they wonderful? She also does etching, colors metal, makes bead caps, headpins and I am sure so much more. She is very talented. I am so happy to have her as a partner.

So lets get back to the Bead Soup Blog Hop and the wonderful box,(which she also made!!) Susan sent me. She sent me so many wonderful things. There is no way I could ever say how happy I am with everything that was inside that box. It was filled to the rim, and everything was wrapped in turquoise tissue paper.(I should have taken a picture but....well.... I forgot. You would have too.) I took my time unwrapping every piece. It was like Christmas or my birthday or something. So much fun. I love the way she labeled every item. Makes it very easy to remember what it all is.

First of all the beads...
Cherry Quartz, Pink Opal, Aventurine, Turquoise, Freshwater pearls! They are all beautiful. The ceramic beads on the left which are from Gaea are really pretty spring colors. And I love the recycled coke bottle glass beads. They are such a pretty color.

And now the metal stuff. Honestly it is all just way too cool!!

This is all stuff she made! Headpins, links, a hammered clasp, jump rings that have been oxidized, the copper beads that she has liver of sulfured and verdigrised, the ear wires, the bead caps. (The only thing she didn't make were the enameled headpins on the left from SueBeads) The PENDANT and The BUTTON CLASP....WOW!!! I know I keep saying it, but I LOVE these!!!

This is just to show a little closer picture of the etching in the bead caps and the colors.
And here is a closer view of the pendant and the button. The Turquoise is just perfect! My first thought is the button will go on a bracelet...but who knows.

So, that is everything. I have a bunch of ideas running around in my head. We are in the second reveal, which is April 6th. I will post a picture of what I sent her tomorrow.

I don't always get to go out in the winter and make beads. But this past weekend we had temperatures in the 50's, so I went out and and had a great time! Lots of blues, greens and turquoise of course, since these are my favorite colors. But I threw in some purple and some red, white and blue too.

My parents gave me a couple button mandrels for Christmas. These buttons are kinda fun to make. They are kinda thick, but I think they will be great for some of the knitting my mom and Kate do. I also think I am going to use one for a project in the Aspire to Wire eCourse with Kerry Bogert that I am currently taking. Every project has been amazing!
I said I would post when I finished. And I did, I finished it last night!! The colors really are so pretty and the swirl pattern from the quilting(that I had someone else do) really looks so good with the swirls in some of the different fabrics.

It is really nice to be done with this project and to have two quilts that will definitely brighten up any room. Now do I start another one or say I'm done with the quilting thing. Its just that all those pretty fabrics call to me....Snazzy Doodle Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06116058413948558506noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1376221024491366941.post-8264092782703507292013-01-09T15:55:00.001-05:002013-01-09T15:55:35.185-05:00My Trip to OberlinWell, I went on a bead shopping trip yesterday. Which is never a good thing. Bead Paradise is a bead store that is about 45 minutes away. I have been going there for forever. When the kids were smaller, they would have to go with me. They would crawl around on the floor and pick up all the loose beads, it would keep them busy for hours. When I finally finished picking out the beads I had to have, Brian and Kate would take there little pile up to Ruth, the owner. They would be so proud of themselves. Ruth was always so nice. She would bag them up and hand them back to them...they were thrilled! (I wonder if they still have these in there rooms somewhere?)

Anyway, every January she has a big 25% off sale. I think she does it to get ready to go to Tuscan. I can't stay away from a sale!! So I always head over once or twice during the month. I didn't buy a lot and it is really kind of a funny mix, but this is what I got.
I also bought a couple of older strands of spacers. Bead Paradise has alot of vintage beads and findings. I find these older strands really fascinating. They have more detail and some wear and tear to them. I got a strand of brass beads and two different sizes of Ethiopian silver. Ethiopian silver is not as pure as sterling silver, which is 925 parts pure silver. The Ethiopian silver is only about 833 parts of pure silver. Anyway, I think these spacers are a great shape and cant wait to use them in some of my pieces.

The last little batch of beads i bought is very eclectic. I wanted to get some pure white beads. I'm not sure these are exactly what I was looking for, but I couldn't leave them behind. The turquoise flowers...well they are my color and it is fun to use these in summer pieces. I had to have the oranges because the last time I was there I bought limes...need I say more?
I made a bunch of scissor fobs today! These are so much fun to make. They are great for that small pair of scissors that you are using for quilting, knitting or stitching. I also know people use them for zipper pulls. I have taken the pictures and they will all be in my Etsy shop in the next day or two. I am embarrassed to admit how long ago I started this quilt, but in the interest of complete disclosure I will...I started this quilt 10 years I ago. Actually, I have a hard time believe it was that long ago, but it was. I decided I was going to make the kids quilts to go in their new rooms. They picked out the colors, nice bright colors. Kate picked green and purple and Brian went with green and blue. I got the quilt tops done right away, and then they just sat. It took me awhile to find the backing fabric and then someone to quilt them for me. But finally, in the past few months, I picked up these quilts and decided to finish them .So this is Kate's, I finished it last night! I am so thrilled that it is completed. I already have the binding attached on Brian's and hope to finish it up in the next week. I love the colors of both of them! Very cheerful. Now I am not exactly sure what I am going to do with them. As Brian is out of the house in his own apartment and Kate only has one more semester at school and then she will be hitting the real world. I don't think they will even want them. I am thinking they will look really nice in an extra bedroom with two twin beds in it....hmmm....

I have no idea what the new year will bring. Life is always a surprise. We never really know what is going to be around the bend. I can tell you what I hope to do this year.....

I hope to be a better mom to my kids. Life has thrown us some
unexpected curves in the last couple of years and put us into
circumstances we never thought we would be in. And although I believe
that we will always be close, they are in their 20's and starting lives
of their own. I have to let them grow and make mistakes. And they will
have to do the same for me.

I hope do better at telling the family and friends in my life that they are important to me. I never would have gotten thru this without all of them! Everyone of them can make me laugh and cry and then laugh again. I love all of them for this.

I hope to find a real job! One that I can love and grow into. One
that lets me be creative...somehow, and work with people so that maybe I
can make their life better or easier or happier. Unfortunately, I have no idea what this job would be, but now is the time to figure it out.

I hope to create better jewelry designs. Make better lampwork beads,
use different wire, maybe different shapes of wire. I am signed up to take Kerry
Bogert's Aspire to Wire course and am very excited for it.

I hope I get better at blogging...I use all the old excuses of no time, nothing to write, who wants to read what I have to say. But...I do want to keep a better watch on my life and maybe this is the way to do it.

I'm sure there are so many things I should work on for this year. I do know you have to stay positive. That things always seem to work out. And just roll with the punches...lol. Some have said it may not be a good year because of the number 13 or the year of the snake. I disagree, I may not love snakes but the number 13 has always be special to me. So I think it is going to be a great year. One of changes, challenges and growth!Snazzy Doodle Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06116058413948558506noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1376221024491366941.post-59094289321434195402012-09-19T21:50:00.000-04:002013-01-06T14:36:13.258-05:00Sea GlassI have a always loved looking for sea glass. I love the colors and the feel of it. I love walking the beach and searching for these colorful pieces of glass.

About a year ago, my friend Heather and I were talking and we realized, we both collect beach glass. Having it, looking at it, hunting for it. So this past weekend we decided to take the short trip north to Lake Erie to find some treasure.

We started out early with a stop at Dunkin Donuts for an ice tea. Need to stay hydrated. The weather man said it was a fifty percent chance of rain but what does he know! They are never right anyway, right?

We drove the 45 minutes to the Rocky River area of Lake Erie and it was grey but so far the weather was holding. And when you are looking for sea glass it is easier to see it when the sun is not shining. We stopped at a couple different spots and found some nice pieces. By the forth stop or beach, it was just starting to rain. We got out of the car and walked down the steps to the beach and....they had cleaned the beach!!! Plowed it, leveled it, whatever they call it, it was awful!!! Well to us sea glass searchers. But we did find some really good spots that they couldn't clean up. And by the time we left, which was at least an hour later, we were soaked...we looked like drowned rats! But we had so much fun. Here is most of the glass I found. So many pretty colors. Even a piece of red, which is a weird piece because it is clear on one side and red on the other.

Oh and while we were out we stopped at a garage sale. Look at the really neat shelf I picked up. Only $5. I love the lines or shape of it. I don't think I have seen one like this before. I have been looking at Pinterest and all the painted furniture. I think I am going to paint this(although the wood is really nice and may end up just staining it). I will post a picture of it after I decide.
Well it is the first reveal day. This hop has gotten so big (399 participants!) that Lori Anderson of Pretty Little things, the organizer and fearless leader of this whole thing had to separate it into three different reveal dates!! So today we get to hop around to about 130 different blogs and see what everyone has created.

Here is a picture of the soup that my partner Linda Landig sent me. Lots of pretty stuff! And look at the colors, don't they look great together. I just love the dragonfly pendant, which is by Shaterra Clay Studio.

And this is what I did with all of that. I added some of my own lampwork beads and just a couple enamel beads and a few other little things and came up with three different pieces.

The first is a bracelet. I made the square lampwork beads first, I just couldn't find the right color yellowy orange that is in the pendant, so I was trying some the different yellowy oranges in my glass stash. So I had them all together in a pile on my bead table and I really liked how they all together.

I used the clasp that Linda sent in this piece and some of the small purple glass beads. Added in the lampwork, some enamel beads, some brass chain and spacers and there you have it. I really love how this came out! It will be a great fall bracelet.

I knew in my next piece I would need to use the dragonfly pendant. Linda also sent some yellow leopard skin jasper beads. I wasn't sure if they would look good with the lampwork beads I made, but when I put them together I liked how it looked. I stayed with the brass for the metal. This necklace is simple, but I like how it turned out.

And just for good measure....I wanted to use these really cute purple beads that I got from Linda. I had the little metal bead caps and thought they would look so cute dangling below.

She was hosting the blog challenge Wrapped, Stacked and Layered. Although I didn't participate in this challenge, it really got me thinking that I wanted to do this! I loved the idea of all the different bracelets all layered together.

So this is what I have come up with so far. All in copper. I hammered out the copper bangles first and connected them with a brass rivet. I had gone to a local shop that had a class on making the bangle with the coiled rose. The bracelet with the cream beads uses waxed linen and copper chain that I attached a bunch of cream flower beads to. The light turquoise wrap bracelet is made of larger seed beads and copper split rings. I found a tutorial to make this bracelet on The Gossiping Goddess blog. This bracelet is so easy and really has a nice feel to it. The last bracelet is the bracelet I made last month that has some of my lampwork beads and the names of my husband and both of my kids on it. I love how they all jangle on my wrist. I think I will keep making bracelets to add to this stack, maybe I can make it go up to my elbow!! The next stack I am going to make is going to be in black and silver....I can't wait to get started!Snazzy Doodle Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06116058413948558506noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1376221024491366941.post-8428536027934106752012-07-24T09:15:00.000-04:002013-01-06T14:38:46.936-05:00What I Sent in My Bead SoupJust wanted to post a quick picture of the soup I sent to my Bead Soup partner Linda.

I sent her just a mix of different things. Of course it is in blues and greens...cause these are the colors I love.(Next time I should do reds or oranges, something just totally out of my comfort zone!)A strand of my lampwork beads. And I also made a flat tab shaped focal, which I have never done before. I sent two different handmade clasps both in copper. I also made some glass head pins, which I have just been playing around with. There are a few enamel beads that could be used as a focal. There are some smaller beads of glass, bone and kiwi jasper. Oh, and I also threw in some suede lacing.

Can't wait to see what she comes up with. The reveal is this Saturday July 28th. That's only a few days away!!!!....I have to get back to work on my Soup!!
Linda lives in Olympia, WA. And sells her colorful pieces on Etsy and Artfire. I have no idea how she knew I liked dragonflies! I actually have a wall in my hallway full of different dragonfly art. Anyway she sent a great soup!

Lots of really nice beads. The dragonfly pendant is made by Shaterra Clay Studio. And I just love it. The clap is made up of two brass leaves, it is really cute. A lot of different glass beads in purple and different shades of yellow or amber. And some yellow leopard skin jasper beads. Oh and a cute little button!

This is not a great picture(couldn't get the right angle) but just wanted to give you an idea what that wall looked like. These are things I have either made in a past life or found in my travels.
Here we are after just getting off the plane and getting thru customs. This is my kids and I, my brother and his family and my parents(well except my Mom she was taking the picture). Don't we look like the typical tourists? It was very warm! So we had already been traveling for about nine hours and still had another hour and a half van ride. But it was totally worth it!

We stayed in the area of Tamarindo. And we saw so many incredible sights!
From the greens of the meadows and jungles to the blues and turquoises of the
ocean. In the water were large formations of black rock. We believe it was lava
that was cooled by the ocean a long time ago. We went to one beach that
just went forever! The tide was out and there were so many different things to
look at. We all love to look for different shells and sea glass. So, we spent
quite a bit of time looking around. Lots of white shells, not so much glass.
But as we were looking we started to find living sand dollars! And when we
looked closer there were hundreds of them! Just under the surface of the sand.
It was really and awesome sight! Here is one that is just starting to hide under the sand.
And when they get completely under the sand it looks like this. And when you
looked back at the beach you could see all these little groupings of holes.
They were all sand dollars! It was really crazy!
We stayed at a wonderful house and the owner, Tatiana was just great
she put up with a lot from our crew. But her house is really nice with a
beautiful pool and a view of the golf course that the cows roam around all day

There were so many interesting things to do in Costa Rica, it was really
hard for us to narrow it down to what we ALL wanted to do. In the end we
did the mud baths, hot springs, zip lining(which was really so much fun!!),
horseback riding, a sunset cruise and hanging out at the beach and pool.

This was at the hot springs and the water was so hot! I wasn't sure
were actually going to make it all the way in. But we all did and it was nice
once you were in. Well for a minute or two.

We went on a sunset cruise and got to do some snorkeling and saw a very
pretty sunset.
One of the things we were all looking forward to was seeing the monkeys,
they were supposed to everywhere! Well it took us a couple days, but we
finally found them! And they were so loud! Hanging in the trees with their legs
just hanging down from the branches. They were very funny.
we will all remember for the rest of our lives. It really is nice to be able to
go on these trips with your family and just enjoy having everyone together.
And we are all so excited. My daughter Kate and I decided it would be fun if we made necklaces...or at least pendants for each of the girls. And even though we have never been there, we picked out colors that we felt were Costa Rican colors...is there such a thing?!

Well, this is what we came up with. Lots of flowers and leaves in coral, turquoise, blues, yellow and green. I even made a little copper and sterling flower..well, just because I thought it would be fun!

So what do you think?Snazzy Doodle Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06116058413948558506noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1376221024491366941.post-30574725242849574902012-06-05T09:11:00.000-04:002013-01-06T14:38:29.706-05:00Mother's Day...sort ofWow! I can't believe I haven't posted in two months! Time flies...I guess.

So I have had an idea for a bracelet for my Mom for awhile. She has grandchildren that range in ages from 23 to 8!! When each of the grandchildren were born, my Dad would get my Mom a charm with each kids name on it and she wears these on a necklace. I wanted to do kind of the same thing on a bracelet. I also wanted to incorporate my lampwork beads, because she loves them! (Although not as much as her grandchildren...lol)

I thought I would make it in sterling but got a little nervous that I might ruin a lot of silver when stamping the names, because I haven't stamped with letters that much. I thought I would practice on the copper first. Eight grand children names are a lot to fit on one bracelet, but it is nice that it is an even number. So it works really well as two of the chains. I added the string of seed beads with some copper spacers. I actually really love how the copper turned out!
They live just a short PATH ride from NYC, so we always try to make a trip into the city. This time we wanted to see the 911 Memorial. It was both sad and wonderful. It is a very moving tribute. The whole design is amazing with all of the names inscribed into the bronze, the waterfalls, and just the size of it. There is even a tree that they have nursed back from the day of the attacks.
(My son hates this part.) These are some of the czech glass beads we saw at one of the stores. We also spent sometime at Metalliferous. They have moved in the past year, up a floor and the space is even smaller!! But they do fit a lot of cool stuff into that tiny store!
We got maybe three inches of snow overnight. It's really not that much, but it is March and I am ready for the warm weather! All the birds are out there singing like crazy! Probably saying what is all this? But, like I said this is Ohio, and the weather changes quite a bit from day to day. THEY say it is supposed to be 56 degrees on Wednesday, so Spring is coming!Snazzy Doodle Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06116058413948558506noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1376221024491366941.post-76642840724443081762012-03-03T03:01:00.001-05:002012-03-03T03:01:00.630-05:00Bead Soup Reveal

I then added a couple of my lampwork beads that I had in the blue that matched the clay focal perfectly! I used all different kinds of brass chain, even one I made myself! This is the first time I've ever made a chain from scratch. Some of the brass is darkened and some of it is not. I think it gives the necklace some nice highlights. This necklace used both the clasp and the focal Suzette sent me.

So, I made a quick wrap bracelet in pinks and greys. I added in some rose quartz, grey Swarovski crystals, opalite rondelles, and one of my lampwork beads for the closure. For the first one, I had these really fun coffee bean beads and was never sure what to do with them. So I etched this little cup onto a piece of copper and then stamped the word java above it, added a couple bean beads...and tah-daaa! A necklace! This necklace is so simple, but it really looks nice on. Would be perfect for a coffee addict.

In this next one, I wanted to use some of my lampwork beads. I originally made these beads in a few colors. I really like how they look all together. There are stripes and dots, some are encased, some are not, and some dots are raised and the others are melted in. Anyway, I thought the green ones would look great with the etched owl square and some copper. These are both going up on Etsy very soon.
